Murals enhance the areas we live, work, & play. A public mural can encourage tourism & local events. A residential mural can create inviting spaces that make a house a home. Commercial murals can elevate the atmosphere & branding of a business. For those that are seriously considering investing in the value & beauty of a mural, you have come to the right place! How much does a mural cost? Is my mural idea possible? How long will it take? I am here to walk you through my mural process & hopefully answer a lot of your questions. Transparency is important to me, because I know it’s important to you!

THE VISION đź’ˇ

STEP ONE: CONSULTATION

The Mural process begins with a consultation to discuss your needs. You may fill out the Commission Form or email. Please be sure to consider the project specifications below first & include as much relevant information as possible. Email any reference images, & color preferences to amywatsonartistry@gmail.com. Another great way to find inspiration & share imagery with me is to go to Pinterest, create & share your board of ideas with me using my email. You can also check out my pins for ideas!

  • Size of coverage… Include Length & Width in feet.
  • Location of the wall… Exterior or interior? Easy Access?
  • Surface of the wall…porous textures like brick, wood, or stucco take extra time & prep.
  • Sun exposure…sun fades color. It may affect color or paint choices.
  • Condition of the wall… Is the wall damaged? Clean? Free of moisture?
  • Environment… Ladder/scaffolds needed?
  • Sealant…Murals at risk of damage from high traffic, graffiti, strong sun exposure etc. are recommended a sealant to insure the mural’s longevity. If done properly, a mural will last for decades.
  • Concept Design…What visuals do you have in mind? What style?
  • Detail…Realistic depictions include considerable detail & time vs. abstract/loose designs.
  • Permit…some public murals could require a city or HOA permit. It varies, so we will discuss that!
  • Deadline…Select a date for ideal completion.

PROPOSAL DESIGN

STEP TWO: DESIGN

Time to create a mural design tailored to you! To create the mock-up, I often make a site visit to take a photo of the wall using my IPad, & digitally draw the design over the photo using Procreate. Mock-ups are key to clarifying details between the client and artist. In addition, it provides a visualization of your custom mural right on the wall!

*Please note that a mock-up is for visualization and layout purposes only. The final mural may have differences due to environmental lighting, placement, and other considerations.

  • Firstly, Consider which design package suits your needs. Single Design Package includes 1 concept design proposal. This option is ideal if you are confident in what you want & communicate it well. The Options Design Package includes 3 concept design proposals. This option is ideal if you want options in design and/or price point. Both options allow the client to give specific feedback for 1 round of alterations.
  • Pay for your chosen design package via PayPal. After that, I begin creating your design(s)!
  • Designing the mural and creating a proposal may take approximately 1 week.
  • The design is emailed for approval. Please note that any of the Artist’s original designs are protected under copyright law and may not be used by another artist, even if I am not hired.
  • If client does not approve of the design, there is no obligation to continue the process, but a mock-up is required before a mural is created.

Single Design Package $150.00 1 design with a free round of design alterations
Options Design Package $300.00 3 designs with a free round of design alterations for your winning design.

VISION TO REALITY

STEP THREE: MURAL!

The last step in the mural process is about finalizing the project, payment, & the mural installation itself!

  • A contract will outline all the project details. The signed agreement and generally, 50% non-refundable payment is required to secure the client’s mural installation date.
  • Now for the exciting part! Initial priming & painting begins. It is normal for the beginning stages to look…well, not good. It is a bit like a construction area. However, the mural will come to life on the wall as the details start coming along, I promise! I check in with my clients throughout the process to give progress updates with photos & the next tasks I’ll be tackling.
  • Once the mural is finished, we will view it together & make sure you approve (hopefully you’ll be over the moon!). Revealing a mural is my FAVORITE part! You should see your face! (Please allow me to video it- insert hopeful eyes here.) It is so satisfying to see a dull wall be completely transformed by a mural that really elevates the experience & atmosphere in the room.
  • The final payment is due on the last day of painting. Then just sit back & vibe in your new, amazing space!

Generally price ranges from $15-$35 per square foot mostly based on size, & design complexity. This cost covers labor, basic materials, travel, and some business related expenses. However, this does not cover rental equipment, wall repair, specialty paint, or mural maintenance.
Multiply the painting surface height and width in feet to determine the Square Foot. (Ex. 9ft x 10ft = 90 sq ft)
