Art Worth Living For
Art plays a larger part in your life than you may realize. What is Art anyway? Art is “the expression or application of human creative skill & imagination, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes from the Dead Poets Society…While there are a great many jobs that are noble and necessary for living, experiencing romance, joy & beauty in the world is truly what makes life worth living for. Art is an extension of the human experience.
Extensive Benefits
There is evidence that shows engaging in art improves mental health greatly by combating depression, anxiety, stress while raising memory retention, self-esteem, and serotonin levels. Though student art programs are the first to fall to funding cuts, evidence shows student art involvement helps them perform better academically. We encourage sleep & healthy eating habits for their body, why not their mental health as well? Art benefits everyone!
Hidden in Plain Sight
Art, in all of its forms, is an integral part of our entire society. From the items we buy, their was a designer behind the packaging & an engineer behind the product. Every book came from a writer who created the story from their imagination or retold their experience. From the screens we watch, there were videographers, graphic designers, actors, fashion and makeup artists behind them. We don’t see the creators most of the time. Artists want you to see what we create, and enjoy it as much as we do.
Art Worth Living (& Dying) For
While we may not need it to physically survive, we do need it mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. We are complex human beings with profound emotions and thoughts. We crave mental balance equally with our physical health.
For instance, Holocaust victims rebelled against the nazis in various ways to preserve their humanity however possible. Prayer, writing diaries, reciting passages from memory (much like the book “Fahrenheit 145”), reading a smuggled book were just a few examples. Even with the smallest infractions, they risked death! This proves that we have a strong will to not just survive, but to live.
